Sir,
30
NG WITH THE ENEMY AFTER THE TAR: CHINA,
I am directed by the Council of this Chamber to say that
they have had under consideration the letter addressed to you by
the China Association, London, on the let instant, on the above
named subject.
In view of the intrigue connected with German
competition in the East, the Council wish to say that they
strongly support the resolution passed by the China Association, viz:
*THAT in view of the unsound principles of trade practised by
German merchants in China in the period before the Tar, and of
the restrictions imposed on British trade with China during the
War, and in view also of the desirability of assisting British
merchants to resuscitate their business with that country, steps
be taken, either, to continue the provisions of the Trading with
the Enemy Act so far as trade with Germans in China is concerned,
or to maintain the present restrictions regarding trade with
+
firme on the White List in China, for a period of five years after
the conclusion of Peace".
The Council trust that this matter will receive the favourable
consideration of His Majesty's Government.
I am, Sir,
Your obedient Servant,
Ipercartling
H. H. Secretary of State for the Colonies, Downing Street,
